Homeade Gear - Simple, Easy and Cheap

I'd have to say the thought of sitting down at a sewing machine and churning out gear is enough to send many a backpacker to the hills, never to be seen again. Still the process doesn't have to be too daunting.

Gradually the commerical manufactures are beginning to get their act together. Too often products sold to backpackers are more appropiate on a summit attempt of Everest, than for a hike trough the woods. Does one really need to take a backpack that weights 7 pounds empty to carry enough goods to spend a few days or a week in the woods? Well the answer is no!

Packs weighing in as little as 12 ounces are now available. They can be purchased or with a little elbow grease, you can make your own. Let me tell you there's a lot of satisfaction spending the night in some distant mountain range at 12,000 feet, knowing your saftey is in the gear made by you!

Below are a series of links to site on the Web where you can find tips for making your own gear.
